East Midlands Humanist Group History

In late 2005 three of us were put in touch by Jemma Hooper at the BHA after we had independently expressed an interest in forming a group. Myself (Geoff Caldwell), David Kimmins and Abigail Phillips had a couple of meetings at the Victoria Pub in Beeston to discuss what to do. We had our first proper meeting of the East Midlands Humanist Group in May 2006 at the Lion Inn, Basford, Nottingham, just for people to meet. About 14 people attended. An inner group naturally emerged and had another meeting during the summer, to be joined by Chris Charlsworth.

There is an interesting mix to the group with an age range from twenties to seventies and a reasonably diverse yet commonplace set of occupations - various retired teachers and doctors, senior librarian, senior psychiatrist, retired shopkeeper, driving instructor (me!), charity worker/administrator, contracts manager for a major engineering firm, musician and so on. Most of the group are from one of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby, Derbyshire, Mansfield, Lincoln and Loughborough.

There are forty people on my Humanist/Sympathisers list - and the number's growing!

The group has a loose structure, with myself acting as Secretary and David Kimmins acting as Chair.
